Last Saturday we had the coldest spin this winter. 8 of us gathered in the frozen and still dark Taylor`s Pub carpark just at the bottom of Threerock and started our preparation for "The Pilgrimage" ThinkBike Spin. After we got our bikes and gear ready we were on our way towards the first climb of the day up towards the Wicklow Mountains. The Kilmashogue climb got everyone warmed up and after that the only challenge was handling the bike well on the icy trails.
It was still dark when we left the carpark but shortly after that the sun started to come up, it was lovely. We all settled into our own comfortable pace on the climbs and re-grouped at the top. The climbs were ok but some of the downhill were very tricky and we all needed to have our best bike handling skills on the edge. Everything was frozen solid and surprisingly the temperature didn`t ease up much during the spin.
It was pretty much clear from the beginning we are not able to go as far as we planned in that cold so we decided to cut the spin short and turn back earlier. After we have passed the Powerscourt Waterfall and started our climb up towards Djouce we all agreed: it was time to head back home. So we cut the loop short and got to the road that took us back through Enniskerry. The gruop stopped for a short brake in Enniskerry and got some coffe to get warmed up for the rest of the way. From Enniskerry we got back to the carpark in very short time and started to pack up and get home to get warmed up properly.
We had a fantastic 3 hours and 30 minutes long spin and even we didn`t go as far as it was planned we had great time on the bike indeed. It was excellent effort from everyone to get a long spin like this done on the very cold day. We are already looking forward to the next spin like this but next time we`ll go further and get more of the mighty Wicklow Way done. Well done everyone, and thank you for coming!
